HARRISBURG – Rep. Frank Ryan (R-Lebanon) will be holding a seminar that will brief seniors on how to spot and avoid financial scams and other types of deceptive practices on Thursday, April 25, 2-4 p.m. at the Lebanon Senior Center.

The event is open to all residents of the 101st District, which includes Lebanon City, Palmyra Borough, Cornwall Borough, West Cornwall, North Cornwall, South Annville, South Londonderry and North Londonderry townships. A representative from the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General will guide the presentation.

“Older adults are often prime targets for many dishonest firms that deliberately prey on the goodness and trustfulness of people who have reached their golden years,” Ryan said. “Many of these scams are played out over the telephone, door to door or through various advertisements. Since there are many ways you can be tricked, your best defense against these predators is to educate yourself about current scams. This way, you can protect yourself and your finances against unscrupulous offers.”

Consumers are cheated out of an estimated $400 million every year in telemarketing losses alone.

“Seniors should be aware of phony deals that sound too good to be true,” Ryan said. “Don't commit to an offer without first checking it out and never divulge personal information, like the number of your checking, savings or credit card accounts, unless you initiated the transaction.”

The Lebanon Senior Center is located at 710 Maple St. in Lebanon and the event will be held in the center’s first floor auditorium.
