HARRISBURG – Rep. Frank Ryan (R-Lebanon) today expressed his support for President Donald Trump’s executive order directing a pause in immigration until Americans can be assured that our immigration policies are being implemented with the safety of our nation as the first priority.

As a retired colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves, Ryan, who spent time in Afghanistan getting to know the Pashtun tribal elders and also extended time in Iraq working with the transitional government helping to vet Iraqis and others for the Deputy Ministerial Committee on National Security and with Iraq’s 2005 national election.

“I have read the president’s executive order and it is a reasonable, rational and measured approach to dealing with a very complex problem,” Ryan said. “We can and should show compassion for Syrian refugees while they are being vetted for our safety and theirs.”

Ryan urged folks to remember that former President Barack Obama’s national security team testified before Congress it is literally impossible for the United States to look into the background of many who claim to be refugees to determine they are who they claim to be and pose no threat.

“If we don’t know much about somebody, there won’t be anything in our data,” Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said in Sept. 2015.“I can’t sit here and offer anybody an absolute assurance that there’s no risk associated with this. I don’t, obviously, put it past the likes of ISIL to infiltrate operatives among these refugees, so that’s a huge concern of ours.”

From his own experience, Ryan said, “It is extremely difficult to vet folks who have zero paper trail and have never made a ripple in the national or international intelligence ponds.”

“If there is no information on someone, what do you do? This is a very, very difficult task and the price for getting it wrong is something you don’t want to contemplate. I took an oath to protect the citizens of this nation when I joined the Corps, and I have taken a similar oath for public office. I intend to keep those oaths.”
