Ryan Supports Tough Sanctions Against Russia, Says More Needed
HARRISBURG – Rep. Frank Ryan (R-Lebanon), Colonel USMCR (Ret), who spent time in eastern Europe in the late 1990s, said he is deeply troubled by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the destruction of its cities and the killing of innocent civilians, including children. Ryan believes the U.S. government and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) could and should be doing more to help them.

“We are in a war. Make no mistake about that,” he said. “We may not have boots on the ground, but we could be providing support for Ukraine in Poland including civil affairs, psychological operations, security and medical personnel to assist Ukrainian refugees.

“The people of Ukraine are proud, resilient and determined to fight for their country and their freedom,” said Ryan, who worked with the Ukrainian military while stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq. “As Americans, we understand their love of country and willingness to put everything on the line to defend it. They may be outnumbered and outgunned by the Russian Army, but they have a strong spirit and everything to lose. They simply cannot give up, and we should do all we can to support them.”

With strong bipartisan support in Congress, this week the U.S., along with the European Union and the United Kingdom acted to restrict or out-and-out ban Russian energy imports to further cripple Russia’s economy for its unprovoked war on Ukraine. In doing so, the allies demonstrated their collective willingness to endure heavy economic and energy disruptions of their own to punish Russian aggression.

“Our abundant natural gas resources here in Pennsylvania provide our nation the opportunity to achieve energy independence,” said Ryan. “Doing so would drive down demand and the price of oil on the worldwide market and reduce funding for Russia’s war machine. The citizens of Ukraine and other free people are depending on our leadership and assistance to protect them from Russian aggression. This should be a top priority of our government. I ask our president to take this threat seriously, act decisively and assure the world we are serious.”
