– Rep. Frank Ryan (R-Lebanon) announced that the Commonwealth Financing Authority today approved a $136,080 Solar Energy Program grant application by Weller Farms for the purchase and installation of a 168.32 kW solar system at its South Londonderry Township farm.
The system will be mounted on the available roof space on one of the farm’s hog houses. The system win generate 188,809 kW of electricity per year, offsetting 100 percent of the company’s annual energy needs.
“Renewable energy and farms are a natural fit,” Ryan said. “Solar heat collectors can be used to dry crops and warm homes, livestock buildings, and greenhouses. Solar water heaters can provide hot water for dairy operations, pen cleaning and homes. Solar power is often less expensive than extending power lines.”
Weller Farms began operation in 1997 and has four chicken houses, six hog barns, 200 acres of corn and 50 acres of soybeans.
The total project cost will be $388,800. Weller Farms will provide $262,720 in matching funds.
